05/17/2007 - Toronto, Ontario (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - After starting the season 0-4 while being badly outplayed, first-year franchise Toronto FC has rebounded in a big way in its last two contests.
The team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday against the Chicago Fire, and Wednesday night, the Ontario club picked up its second-straight victory as goalkeeper Greg Sutton picked up the first cleansheet in Toronto FC history over defending MLS champion Houston, 1-0.
"It's about time ain't it," Sutton joked.
Andy Welsh scored the game's lone goal in the 25th minute off a free kick, and the much aligned Toronto defense - which gave up 11 goals in its first five games - came together the rest of the way to help Sutton record the shutout.
"After they scored they pretty much sat back and tried to defend," Houston midfielder Dwayne De Rosario said. "We need to stay positive and generate chances, it will come from those chances."
It was the fourth time in its first six games that Houston has been shutout this season.
The game started with Houston taking the play to the home squad for the first 10 to 15 minutes. The home team started to come to life when the announced crowd of 19,123 filtered into the stadium a little late because of traffic problems around Toronto, but not before the Dynamo had an excellent chance to take the early lead.
A Brad Davis corner kick in the opening minutes was deflected in the box and cleared off the line by Toronto midfielder Ronnie O'Brien to keep the game scoreless.
O'Brien - making just his second start of the season after suffering a knee injury in the preseason - was also instrumental at the other end of the field in Toronto's fourth goal of the season.
With the team set up for a free kick along the left side, O'Brien bent a perfect cross into the box to an unmarked Welsh, who headed it past Houston's Canadian goalkeeper, Pat Onstad, for the 1-0 lead.
"Ronnie (O'Brien) decided to (bend the ball) around the back," Welsh said. "I think the ball may have hit my shoulders, I can't remember.
"I had my eyes closed," he quipped.
TFC had a chance to double the lead about 10 minutes later when Walsh stole the ball off Dynamo defender Ryan Cochran and broke in alone on Onstad, but instead of shooting, he tried to pass and the ball and was intercepted by Davis who cleared.
Two minutes later Davis had a chance at the other end when he volleyed a Brian Mullan cross, but Sutton did well to make one of his four saves in the game.
Houston had its best chances to score in the opening seven minutes of the second half, but both were missed badly by newly acquired forward Joseph Ngwenya.
On the first, Ngwenya broke in behind the defense on the right side, but a bad last touch before his shot let the defense catch him and he fired a shot wide with a wide open Brian Ching in the box. On his second chance, Ngwenya broke in alone again, this time on the left side, and like the first opportunity, he fired wide with Ching open for a pass.
"You don't finish, the other team finishes, you lose," De Rosario said. "I thought we played well, we moved the ball well, but again, in the final third we should have finished one or two breakaways. We should have hit the net but that is the way the ball bounces sometimes."
Toronto striker Edson Buddle had a chance to ice the game in the 80th minute when he had a breakaway from midfield with Houston pressing for the equalizer, but Onstad came out and cut the angle down to make the save.
With the loss, De Rosario, a Toronto native, has his first trip to BMO field in his hometown was spoiled.
"It was great to be back home to steal a line from a Tom Jones song," De Rosario said. "The atmosphere is great here, I know the fans wanted a team here. Great atmosphere, great support, you can't ask for more."
Toronto (2-4-0) moves out of the Eastern Conference cellar with the win, moving two points clear of D.C. United, who plays at Toronto on Saturday. TFC also improves to 2-1 in the third game of its four-game homestand. Houston (2-3-1) will be back in action Saturday as well when it hosts Eastern Conference leading New England.
