05/17/2007 - Flushing, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jorge Sosa allowed one hit over seven-plus innings and Damion Easley belted a two-run homer to power the New York Mets to an 8-1 win over the Cubs in the third contest of a four-game series.
The start of Wednesday's game was delayed for 3 hours, 7 minutes, and didn't end until just before 1 a.m. (et), leaving the teams nearly 12 hours to rest before the conclusion of the series Thursday afternoon.
Sosa (3-0) departed after yielding one run with three walks and five strikeouts. Joe Smith and Billy Wagner each pitched an inning to finish the two-hitter.
David Wright and Carlos Gomez each had two hits and a pair of RBI for the Mets, who won for the sixth time in eight games and rebounded from a 10-1 loss on Tuesday.
Cliff Floyd drove in the lone run for Chicago, which lost for the fifth time in seven contests.
Rich Hill (4-3) was charged with seven hits and four runs through six innings in defeat. He walked four and struck out six.
Paul Lo Duca and Shawn Green singled with two outs in the bottom of the second, and Gomez followed with an RBI hit to right field.
It became 2-0 in the next inning as the Mets loaded the bases before Wright lofted a fly ball to shallow right-center field. Second baseman Ryan Theriot backpedaled to make the catch, allowing Easley to score easily.
Jose Reyes singled with two outs in the fourth and Easley followed with his sixth homer of the season, a blast to left field, as the Mets expanded their lead to 4-0.
Sosa continued to impress, setting down the Cubs in order in the fifth and sixth innings before walking Daryle Ward with one out in the seventh. However, the right-hander retired the next two batters, striking out Jacque Jones to end the inning.
The Mets continued to pour it on in the bottom of the inning, this time against Neal Cotts, who walked Carlos Beltran and then gave up a single to Carlos Delgado to begin the frame. Wright then doubled to left field and Lo Duca added a sac fly. One out later, Gomez doubled in Wright.
Chicago's only run came in the eighth. Cesar Izturis walked to begin the inning, ending Sosa's night on the mound, as Smith came in from the bullpen. Izturis advanced to third on a pair of groundouts and scored on Floyd's broken-bat single to right field.
Pinch-runner Ruben Gotay scored on a Carlos Delgado fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth.
