Nats hope to stay hot against Braves

05/17/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Atlanta Braves are currently struggling and will try for a split of a four-game series with the Washington Nationals this afternoon in the finale of the set at RFK Stadium.

Atlanta has dropped three of its last four games, including Wednesdays 6-4 setback in the third test of the series. Scott Thorman had two hits and an RBI with a run scored and Edgar Renteria contributed a pair of hits and scored a run for the Braves. Andruw Jones stroked two hits in the losing cause.

Starting pitcher Kyle Davies lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs, two of which were earned, and five hits for the loss.

Atlanta, which is a half-game behind the New York Mets for the lead in the NL East, is 3-3 so far on a 10-game road trip and will travel to Boston for three games at Fenway Park following this afternoons tilt in D.C.

Chuck James will take the mound in Thursday afternoon's series finale, and is 4-3 with a 4.04 ERA in eight starts this season.

James is 2-1 over his last four starts and flirted with a no-hitter his last time out on May 12 against Pittsburgh. James allowed one hit -- a Jason Bay single in the seventh -- over seven innings of work with three strikeouts and no walks.

The left-handed James will take on Washington for the third time this season and is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA. On April 11 he earned the win with six shutout innings of five-hit ball. Five days later James was the loser after allowing three runs in five innings of work.

In five career starts against the Nationals, James is 2-2 with a 3.95 ERA.

Washington, meanwhile, has won five of its last six games after an eight-game slide and continued its winning ways with last night's triumph. Ryan Church's three-run double in the fifth inning proved to be the difference, as the Nationals improved to 5-1 on their 10-game homestand.

Ryan Zimmerman had two hits, including a home run, and two RBI, while Ronnie Belliard knocked in a run and scored twice for Washington, which is still last in the NL East standings.

Starter Levale Speigner gave up four runs and eight hits in four innings of work and Billy Traber got the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Reliever Jon Rauch then posted his second save in the ninth inning.

The Nationals will counter the Braves with pitcher Matt Chico, who is 2-4 with a 5.59 ERA over eight starts this season.

Chico had lost consecutive starts before posting a no decision his last time out on May 12 against Florida. He yielded just a run and five hits in 4 1/3 innings of work and is 1-3 in the past five trips to the hill.

The lefty will toe the rubber for the third time this season against Atlanta, and is 1-1 with a 1.86 ERA. In the first outing on April 10 Chico suffered the loss, giving up four runs -- one earned -- over 4 2/3 innings.

Chico then squared off with the Braves for the second time in his career on April 16, and was the winner with five solid innings of one-run ball.

The 2007 series between Atlanta and Washington is tied at four games apiece. The Nats have won four of the past six encounters, though.
