09/06/2010 - Houston, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Houston Texans have agreed to a one-year contract with quarterback Matt Leinart, according to the player's agent.
The Houston Chronicle cited Leinart's agent, Tom Condon, as confirming the move, which comes two days after the fifth-year pro was released by Arizona.
The 27-year-old Leinart had spent his entire career with Arizona and was expected to take over the starting role there following the retirement of Kurt Warner. However, the defending NFC West champions settled on newcomer Derek Anderson as their starting quarterback and subsequently parted ways with the former Heisman Trophy winner at USC.
Leinart started 11 games in his rookie season and five more in 2007, but sat most of the last two years behind Warner.
Last year Leinart threw for just 435 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions in limited time behind Warner. He started one game for an injured Warner, completing 21-of-31 passes for 220 yards in a Week 12 loss to Tennessee.
He's expected to serve in a backup role once again, this time behind Houston starter Matt Schaub and perhaps behind second-stringer Dan Orlovsky.
Leinart has thrown for 3,983 yards with 14 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in four NFL seasons. He connected on 22-of-28 throws for 175 yards with one score and no picks for Arizona this preseason.
